Certain fabrics can trap moisture, making it easier for bacteria to thrive. As a general rule of thumb, go for underwear made of breathable fabrics. The connection between sex and UTIs

Intercourse by itself doesn’t cause a UTI, but sexual activity does allow for the movement of bacteria along the skin. When bacteria move from the anus to the bladder, it has a greater chance of entering the urinary tract and causing an infection. Since women's urethras are located much closer to the anus than men's, it's easier for bacteria to make their way into the urethra during sex. This is why women are so much more prone to UTIs in general.

Sex itself doesn't cause UTIs. It's the bacteria on the skin that find their way up the urethra.

Other elements that go into sex—like contraception—can complicate things even more. Spermicides and diaphragms tend to aggravate the sensitive tissue of the vulva and lead to more frequent UTIs. And spermicide-coated condoms can also make the vagina more susceptible to E. coli bacteria, which cause UTIs.

On the other hand, unlubricated condoms can irritate the genitals, creating inflammation in the bladder. This makes it easier for bacteria to grow, causing a UTI. But research is limited, and it seems like the vast majority of condoms do not increase the risk of UTIs. How are UTIs usually treated?

When you ask your doctor how to get rid of bacteria that causes UTIs, the most common answer is with an antibiotic prescription. A wide range of antibiotics may be used to treat your UTI depending on how severe the infection is and whether or not it has traveled into the kidneys. Unfortunately, antibiotics can also have negative side effects.

When these protected bacteria eventually release into the bladder, they create a new infection. This is how the cycle of chronic UTIs gets out of hand.
  3. Antibiotics often cause secondary issues, like yeast infections. because they wipe out good bacteria along with the bad. Your vagina needs those good guys in order to prevent bacterial and fungal overgrowth. So when the good guys are killed off, it throws off your vagina's pH balance and yeast can begin growing out of control. This is why doctors will often prescribe anti-fungal medication along with antibiotics.
  4. Frequent antibiotic use disrupts the balance of gut flora, which can lead to a host of other health problems. The diverse community of bacteria within your intestinal tract play a key role in just about every bodily function.
