A 2016 study published in the Journal of the American Medicine Association proves that consuming cranberry pills for UTI prevention is ineffective:

  • • Dr. Manish Juthani-Mehta centered her research on nursing home patients; a demographic that’s prone to getting UTIs.
  • • The clinical trial consisted of 147 women. Half were chosen at random to take two cranberry capsules per day. Each contained 36 milligrams of proanthocyanidin, that active ingredient that’s supposed to keep bacteria from adhering to the bladder wall. The other half of the patients were given a placebo.
  • • The research team discovered there was no difference in the amount of bacteria present between the treatment (29.1%) and control (29.0%) groups, over 1 year. To put it simply, cranberry pills and juice did not work to prevent UTIs.

Does cranberry juice help with UTI?

Cranberry juice has been proven ineffective when preventing UTIs. A widely received 2016 study from the American Medical Association determined that cranberry juice and cranberry supplements do not eradicate UTI-causing bacteria.
In an editorial published with the study, Dr. Lindsay E. Nicolle, a UTI expert at the University of Manitoba, says the evidence is “convincing that cranberry products should not be recommended as a medical intervention for the prevention of UTI.”
