Common UTI Questions

What causes a UTI?

UTIs are caused when bacteria enter the urethra, travel up to the bladder, and multiply (see left). This triggers an inflammatory response in your body causing the symptoms you typically associate with a UTI, such as burning when urinating, urgency, and pelvic pain.

Certain things can increase the risk of bacteria entering the urinary tract. Common triggers include:

Sex, holding it, dehydration, hormonal changes (especially around menopause), antibiotics, and wearing tight, moisture-trapping clothing for long periods of time ie. when exercising, traveling, or swimming.

Why do women get them more than men?

Women are more likely to get UTIs than men because they have shorter urethras so the bacteria doesn't have to travel as far to reach the bladder and cause an infection.

Why do I keep getting them over and over again?

Unfortunately, once you get a UTI your chance of getting another one increases. Why is this? Biofilms are typically to blame. Biofilms are sticky networks of microorganisms that act as a shield for certain bacteria, protecting them from your immune system and antibiotics. If the bacteria that caused your initial infection develops biofilm, it can stay protected. Then, once it ends it's dormancy it causes what is known as a relapse infection or a recurring UTI (rUTI). Recurring UTIs can be defined as at least 3 episodes of UTIs in the previous 12 months or at least 2 episodes within the previous 6 months.

Can a UTI go away on its own?

Although some uncomplicated UTIs can resolve on their own, it is important to seek medical attention if UTI symotoms persist for several days since UTIs can lead to serious issues (like kidney infections) if not treated. As of now, antibiotics are the only proven treatment method once you have developed a UTI. Uqora is currently spearheading research to help find an alternative to antibiotic treatment for UTIs via a clinical trial and hopes to find a better solution soon!

As of now, antibiotics are the only known effective treatment once you have a UTI. However, rising concerns over antibiotic resistance will hopefully lead to innovations in UTI treatment in the near future. In fact, Uqora currently has a clinical trial in the works to help find an alternative to antibiotic treatment for UTIs!
